Overcoming the communication barrier a mask poses to the hearing impaired - BRProud.com

Image
MONROE, La – Governor Edwards says it’s good to wear a mask when you’re out in public to protect yourself from COVID-19. But how does wearing a mask affect those who are hearing impaired? Before wearing a mask, speech and sound were easy to understand, but with the mask, the sound is muffled, and reading lips when someone is talking is impossible. Hearing specialists say wearing a mask causes us to lose 10 decibels of speech when talking. “To put that in perspective, when we make adjustments on hearing aids, we might do a two decibel increase or decrease, or four, or maybe even six decibels would be a substantial change in sound, so 10 decibels is night and day,” said Jason Shevchuk, Hearing Instrument Specialist at Audibel Hearing Center. And while wearing a mask impacts how we hear each other, it also affects those who wear glasses, hearing aids, and a mask. “When we take our mask off, our hearing aids always just have a tendency to flip off with them, so when wearing a heari

Hearing aid contest winners receive new devices - Dothan Eagle

One lost her hearing due to an inner ear disorder; another had a history of hearing loss in her family; and another could only attribute the loss to age and a lifetime of loud noises. Whatever the cause, each of the six winners of an annual hearing aid contest had struggled with their hearing loss for years. From more than 50 essays received by mail and email, the six Wiregrass residents chosen to receive free devices were Angie McKinney, Ross Kelley, Julia Eldridge, Glenn Anderson, James Bedsole, and Rita Langford. The hearing aid essay contest has been held for nearly 20 years by Physicians Hearing Center and the Dothan Eagle . ‘Already a winner’ Angie McKinney is a house parent at Chrysalis Home for Girls and was nominated by several of the girls who reside in the group home. “I love ’em and I guess they love me, too,” McKinney said. Hearing loss runs in McKinney’s family. Her father wears hearing aids. She has a sister and a brother who wear them. McKinney was young — about

Study charts developmental map of inner ear sound sensor in mice: Data offers valuable resource for developing stem cell-based therapies for hearing loss - Science Daily

A team of researchers has generated a developmental map of a key sound-sensing structure in the mouse inner ear. Scientists at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), part of the National Institutes of Health, and their collaborators analyzed data from 30,000 cells from mouse cochlea, the snail-shaped structure of the inner ear. The results provide insights into the genetic programs that drive the formation of cells important for detecting sounds. The study also sheds light specifically on the underlying cause of hearing loss linked to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Loeys-Dietz syndrome. The study data is shared on a unique platform open to any researcher, creating an unprecedented resource that could catalyze future research on hearing loss. Led by Matthew W. Kelley, Ph.D., chief of the Section on Developmental Neuroscience at the NIDCD, the study appeared online in Nature Communications. The research team includes investigators at the University o

Twillingate making things safer for child with hearing impairment - SaltWire Network

TWILLINGATE, N.L. — Laine Broderick is as adventurous as any other three-year-old.  He has found his legs and enjoys showing off his running ability any time he can. “(Laine) is a cute and charming kid,” said his mother, Julie-Anne Broderick of Twillingate. Laine is a child with profound hearing loss, and has hearing below that of his peers. When he is making the most of his days outside, Laine doesn’t always hear the cars and all-terrain vehicle users who frequent the area around his house. The batteries for his cochlear implants might need to be changed or there might be other noises around him that prevent him from hearing the incoming vehicles. To make things safer for their son, the Brodericks requested the Town of Twillingate install signs letting people know there is a child with profound hearing loss in the area. Laine Broderick, who has profound hearing loss, is shown here in front of a sign in his neighbourhood in Twillingate indicating the presence of a child with pro

Pandemic safety measures pose unique challenges for hearing impaired - The Herald-News

[All photos provided] Get the listener’s attention before you speak. Saying the person’s name and waiting for a response can greatly decrease the need for repetitions. Speak clearly and at a slow/normal rate. Do not talk unusually slow or exaggerated. Pausing between sentences and key words or phrases can also be helpful. This is called “clear speech." Do not shout. Shouting actually distorts the signal in the listener’s ears. Be sure the listener has a clear view of your face so that facial expressions and lip movements are visible. Rephrase rather than offering a repetition. Quite often, the same one or two words in a sentence will continue to be misheard with each repetition. Rephrasing eliminates many frustrations. Avoid conversation if the TV or radio is playing, the dishwasher is running, and so on. Noisy distractions can create difficult listening situations even for those with normal hearing. Move to a quieter spot or turn off the noise distractions. Remain pati

John Hickenlooper refuses to testify virtually, seeks to delay hearing on ethics complaint - The Colorado Sun

Image
John Hickenlooper is now refusing to testify on an ethics complaint against him and is threatening to file a lawsuit to block a hearing on his case. In a legal filing Friday, an attorney for Hickenlooper said the former governor would not participate in the June 4 hearing before the Colorado Ethics Commission because the video conferencing format denies his due process rights to confront witnesses and consult in-person with his attorney.  Hickenlooper, a Demoratic candidate for U.S. Senate backed by national party leaders, faces a complaint originally filed in October 2018 that he accepted illegal gifts and failed to disclose flights on private jets and other travel arrangements. A prolonged preliminary investigation and series of delays — exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic — pushed the hearing in the case to a week before ballots hit the mail for the June 30 Democratic primary. The candidate’s “reputational interests are at stake here, and it is disappointing that the commissi

Don't Miss This by: Kelsey Jones and Nexstar Media Wire Posted: May 22, 2020 / 11:09 AM CDT / Updated: May 22, 2020 / 11:09 AM CDT CHANTILLY, Va. (WDVM) – As COVID-19 continues to spread, the CDC has recommended everyone wear face coverings when going out. However, this raises a problem for those who are hearing-impaired. “When you have hearing difficulties, you rely a lot on visual cues to be able to fill in the gaps and understand what is being said,” said Pinky Khatri, doctor of audiology at Family Hearing Services in Chantilly, Virginia. “When you wear a mask, you no longer have those visual cues to follow along the conversation.” One solution is the use of clear masks, which lets people see lips moving. Khatri said one of the biggest concerns for hearing-impaired people is visits to the hospital or going for virus tests. Clear masks would help ease communication difficulties during medical visits. She said she has reached out to local groups so health care provid
