More than 13 years after Tara Grinstead was reported missing — and more than a year after two men were charged in connection with her murder — a court hearing will begin Monday to determine how the case proceeds. Among the key issues a judge must decide: Whether most charges should be dropped because too much time has passed since the crime, and whether the trial should be moved from Irwin County in South Georgia. Chuck Boring, Cobb County assistant district attorney who is not involved with the case, said moving the trial might be unnecessary. It’s okay for jurors selected for the trial to already have an opinion on the case, he said. “It’s whether that opinion is so fixed that it cannot be changed by the evidence” that might disqualify them, Boring said. The brother of one of the four homicide victims found at a burning New Jersey mansion is due in court on allegations he set fire to his own house. A detention hearing for Paul Caneiro is scheduled for Wednesday. He's charged with aggravated arson. Monmouth County prosecutors say Caneiro set his Ocean Township home on fire while his family was inside. All safely escaped. Prosecutors will seek to have him held until his trial. Caneiro's attorney has said Caneiro is innocent . The fire at Caneiro's home occurred a few hours before the blaze at the Colts Neck home of his brother Keith was reported. Keith Caneiro and his family were found dead. Officials say all were slain before the fire. Authorities won't say if Paul Caneiro is a suspect in the slayings. https://ift.tt/2r5TrQh

LAWRENCE — Two months after explosions and fires rocked the Merrimack Valley in September, U.S. senators will hold a hearing in Lawrence to review the response in the wake of the natural gas disaster. The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will hold its oversight hearing at the South Lawrence East Middle School from 9 a.m.  to 3 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 26. The hearing will be in the gymnasium of the South Lawrence East Middle School, 165 Crawford St., Lawrence. Members of the state’s congressional delegation are expected to participate, including Democratic Sen. Ed Markey, who is a committee member, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and U.S. Reps. Preliminary conversations about a potential settlement have gone nowhere, sources said, and the NFL and NFLPA are deep in discussions finalizing the specifics of Colin Kaepernick's collusion grievance hearing against the league, multiple sources said. The process is tentatively scheduled for early 2019 in Philadelphia, sources said, with the various parties involved and Kaepernick's legal team continuing to hash out the final details. They continue to finalize the schedule of events and have been in discussions with the bevy of NFL luminaries required to testify, putting together a template of what a two-week calendar will look like with many of those involved having other commitments and responsibilities. COLUMBIA, SC - We are in the third week of the Public Service Commission's hearing into utility company SCANA and the role the company played in a failed nuclear plant that has cost customers millions of dollars.  So far in the 10 days of the hearing, testimony has revealed that the company lied about the status of the project and ultimately offset extra costs on customers. The extradition hearing for John Downey, who is wanted in Northern Ireland in relation to the murder of two British soldiers in 1972, has been adjourned. The application for adjournment was made by Mr Downey's lawyer in the Criminal Courts of Justice this morning. The 66-year-old, whose trial for the IRA's Hyde Park bombing collapsed in controversy four years ago, was arrested earlier this month at his home in Ards, Creeslough, Co Donegal, under a European arrest warrant.
