Implications for hearing loss claims - Goldscheider v Royal Opera House - Lexology

Image
In a landmark judgement the Court of Appeal have unanimously agreed the Royal Opera House (ROH) Covent Garden failed to take reasonable steps to prevent injury to viola player Christopher Goldscheider during a 2012 rehearsal of the Wagner opera, Die Walkure. As a result of his injury Mr Goldscheider suffered acoustic shock and was left unable to work as a musician. On 1 September 2012 Mr Goldscheider was seated at the 5th desk of the viola section, directly in front of an 18 piece brass section. Noise levels at points during the rehearsal reached decibel levels roughly equivalent to that of a jet engine. The ROH argued they had taken all reasonably practicable steps to reduce the risk of noise exposure, pointing to the fact that: the risks posed to orchestral players by noise exposure had been carefully considered; a variety of hearing protection had been provided; and training and instruction had been provided to players. However the Court found there were a number of further

Headphone use: How you could be damaging your hearing - NBC2 News

News 30 percent more people have some form of hearing loss than 20 years ago. Tuesday, April 30th 2019, 1:10 AM EDT by Nestor Montoya SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - Millions of Americans wear them every single day, but experts said incorrect and excessive headphone use could cause permanent damage to your ears. "There’s no fixing it. Once those nerves in the inner ear are damaged, there’s not, as of yet, any way to rejuvenate them," Jack Adams of Audiology Consultants of Southwest Florida said. Adams said the damage done to an ear's nerve fibers depends on the decibel levels and the time you're exposed to the noise. Sound levels created by city traffic, an alarm clock, or garbage disposal are measured in the 80-85 decibel range . Experts said the average person could be exposed to those noises for eight hours before permanent damage begins. "It halves the amount of time for every five decibels in intensity. At

I take responsibility for that.” “I apologized for it,” said Biden in the interview that was taped before his campaign rally in Pittsburgh on Monday. “I apologize again because, look, here’s the deal. She just did not get treated fair across the board. The system did not work,” the former vice president said. Association Between Chronic Conditions and Visual Impairment - MD Magazine

Image
Diane Zheng, MS, PhD-C On Tuesday, investigators at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology presented the results of a study that details the association between chronic diseases and visual impairment. Researchers from the University of Miami found that, after analyses accounting for variable factors, a pattern of chronic conditions is associated with a greater likelihood of reporting visual impairment. “Visual impairment is strongly associated with patterns of chronic conditions. The sicker the population, the more likely for them to report visual impairment,” said Diane Zheng, MS, PhD-C, lead author from the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, during her presentation on Monday morning. Investigators sought to identify and describe between chronic conditions and their relationship with visual impairments. Investigators utilized the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2002 through 2014 to identify a cohort

Huffman's guilty plea hearing moved up - Otago Daily Times

Image
US actress Felicity Huffman is expected to plead guilty on May 13 to charges that she took part in a sweeping college admissions cheating scam. The Desperate Housewives star had been scheduled to enter her plea in Boston federal court on May 21, but a judge on Monday agreed to move up the hearing because the lead prosecutor would be out of town. Huffman (56) was accused of paying a consultant $US15,000 ($NZ22,000) disguised as a charitable donation to boost her daughter's SAT  (suite of assessments) score. The SAT is a standardised test widely used for college admissions in the US. Huffman will plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest-services mail fraud, according to court documents. Those charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison, but the plea agreement indicates prosecutors will seek a sentence of four to 10 months. Also on Monday, lawyers formally entered not guilty pleas in court on behalf of Full House actress Lori Loughlin, her husband, Mos

Kiwis' meth spend more than $1ma day - Otago Daily Times

New Zealanders spend nearly $1.4 million on methamphetamine every day, according to police analysis of three months of drug testing of wastewater. Described by scientists as "one large urine test", the wastewater testing started with three sites in 2016 - Whangarei, Auckland's North Shore and Christchurch - but was rolled out nationwide last November. The ESR testing at 38 sites now captures 80 per cent of the population and officials hope it will paint a clearer picture of New Zealand's drug habits. The drugs that have been tested for are methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, MDMA and fentanyl. An average of 16kg of methamphetamine has been consumed each week in November, December and January according to the preliminary results released today. This costs the country an estimated $20 million each week in social harm - or $1 billion a year - said Police Commissioner Mike Bush. "These early results give us an idea of the potential for this type of data and, as t

Aronson noted that while the newest and therefore most expensive hearing devices typically provide the best quality of sound, going back to slightly older models can be an option to cut costs. “Unless you’re very, very active and still working and still going to all these groups and everything, the hearing aids that were (from) a year ago are still really good,” she said. Related:  Santa Clarita Audiologist Debunks Myth That People Can Be ‘Too Young’ For Hearing Devices Because newer models have come out, Aronson added that she sometimes may even be able to offer special deals on older models. “I may be able to make a deal with the manufacturers so I can provide really good service for hearing to our seniors and to people that don’t have the money,” said Aronson. As far as the audiology industry is concerned, there is a veil of complications involved. Dr. Vikrant states, “The current scenario is a bit tricky. On one side you have a huge opportunity with a lot of patients requiring the services. While on the other hand, because patients have very few options to choose from, sometimes they are misleading because there is a lot of demand but suppliers are few. There is a possibility that the patient can get a bit mishandled. Where we try to stand out is despite knowing that there is huge potential, we are not after huge numbers. It's not churning like a factory and we want it to grow like that.” In terms of speech, when one talks of audiology clinics, most of them will only get hearing aids and nothing else because that's where the revenue comes in.
