Mask-wearing and social distancing have become essential safety measures in the pandemic. But for people who rely on lip-reading and facial expressions to communicate, the increased use of facial coverings can lead to even greater isolation.  Nicole Laffan, assistant clinical professor at Bouvé College of Health Sciences. Photo by Ruby Wallau/Northeastern University Face coverings over the nose and mouth can decrease the volume of the speech by up to 12 decibels, which makes it hard for listeners with normal hearing to understand, never mind for people with hearing loss. Individuals with hearing loss may struggle to communicate basic needs at work, with friends and family, or even when  ordering a coffee. Add in a global health crisis and the stakes take on a quality of life urgency. “If patients lose the ability to communicate, they lose the ability to participate in life,” says  Dr. Nicole Laffan , an audiologist, speech-language pathologist, and assistant clinical professor

How to Get the Best Hearing Aid Prices - Health.com

Hearing aids are a simple way to improve quality of life for seniors who are hard of hearing. About 33% of people ages 65 to 74 have some degree of hearing loss; the number jumps to 50% for those ages 75 and over.  Only about 16% of people who would benefit from hearing aids have ever used them according to the Hearing Loss Association of America. For many people, hearing aids are simply unaffordable. That may be changing, though, as new brands and new ways of buying hearing aids gain popularity. Most people—about 85%—buy hearing aids as a pair.  Even though the average hearing aid price is over $2,500, it’s possible to ge

RESIDENTS of Wem are being invited to take an online hearing check to mark November's Hearing Awareness Month. A recent poll by eyesight and hearing specialists Scrivens found two-thirds of people said wearing face coverings had affected their ability to hear clearly or make themselves heard. The poll of 2,000 adults revealed the average person was only prepared to ask someone to repeat what they said twice, and many found inventive ways to pretend they had heard. Melanie Mort, manager of Scrivens's Wem branch, said residents should take the hearing check if difficulty hearing was becoming more common. "Our research shows mishearing or not hearing something can make us feel uncomfortable," she said. "As we don't like to cause offence or make others feel uneasy we'll frequently resort to going along with it to save face or put that person at ease. "It's not surprising masks, face coverings and screens to help guard against the spread of cor
