Untreated hearing loss linked to higher health costs, more hospitalizations - Reuters

(Reuters Health) - - Older adults with untreated hearing loss may develop additional health problems that lead to more frequent hospitalizations and higher health costs than their counterparts without hearing trouble, two U.S. studies suggest. One study followed 4,728 people for a decade, starting when they were 61 years old, on average. Half had untreated hearing loss. Over 10 years, this translated into $22,434 more per person in total health costs and over 40 percent higher odds of hospitalizations and repeat admissions. “There are two potential causes linking hearing loss to higher healthcare spending and utilization,” said lead study author Nicholas Reed of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. “The first is that hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline, dementia, depression, and social isolation - all of which could contribute to higher healthcare spending and use,” Reed said by email. “The second is that patient-provider communication could be

People with single-sided deafness or one ear that is not able to understand speech clearly are at a significant disadvantage when attempting to understand speech and other sounds. This type of hearing loss is called a unilateral hearing loss. This problem is increased when there is noise in the room while the desired sound is occurring. They have difficulty judging the distance a sound is from them and the location of the sound. This discrepancy in how the two ears hear sound interferes with how the brain processes sound. How CROS Hearing Aids Work The hearing aids used by people with only one working ear are called the CROS. The acronym stands for contralateral routing of signal (CROS). With CROS hearing aids, the person wears a hearing aid on each ear. A microphone picks up the sound from the side of the head with the extremely poor hearing and transfers it directly to the receiver in the hearing aid on the other side in the better ear. This helps a person hear in real time from bo

Medowie resident Mariann Clarke, who is fronting the campaign to be featured on posters and online, said that her life had been transformed since regaining her hearing with a cochlear ear. “I had struggled with hearing all my life, but since undergoing an operation at Kurri Kurri Hospital I have gone from being profoundly deaf to having 80 per cent of my hearing back,” Mrs Clarke said. “I now feel more connected to my family … I can hear and better communicate with them, including our 20 grandchildren.” Mrs Clarke received her first hearing aid aged 39, but this did not stop the deterioration. She became reclusive and avoided contact with family and friends. “I didn’t feel normal. I didn’t want to participate because I struggled to hear and hold a conversation. I had lost confidence from not being

"They believe that I was born with it. It's just that the testing standards at that point weren't the best." Dr. Bloom had a roughly 60 percent hearing deficit in both ears. "They just missed it for all those years. There were little signs that people in my family were noticing." Those signs included her speech lagging behind and she sat too close to the tv to hear it.

New Jersey lawmakers plan hearing on adenovirus outbreak that's killed 11 children - CBS News

Image
New Jersey lawmakers plan to hold a hearing at the state capitol in Trenton on Monday in hopes of learning more about a virus outbreak that's claimed the lives of 11 children. The New Jersey Department of Health confirmed Wednesday that 48 children and one staff member at two facilities in the state have contracted the virus. At the hearing, members of the New Jersey Senate Health Committee will question leadership from the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, the facility where all of the deaths have occurred, on how the adenovirus, a respiratory virus, infected 34 vulnerable pediatric patients, ultimately killing 11 children . Amanda Melillo, a research assistant at the state Senate, described the inquiry as a "fact finding mission" to determine what happened and what the state's responsibility may be in the tragedy.  All of the victims had severely compromised immune systems due to other serious medical conditions and many were considered wards of t

Defendants successfully strike out maritime hearing loss personal injury claim - Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

In Meek v. (1) BP Shipping and (2) Fyffes, the claimant brought a claim for noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). He worked as a ship’s carpenter between 1974 and 1979 for BP Shipping and Fyffes. Proceedings were commenced in the County Court and were served on the defendants. This was a standard hearing loss claim except for the fact that both defendants were shipowners, and the claimant’s entire alleged exposure to the injurious noise took place on board ships at sea. Therefore, defendants pleaded that the claim should have been started in the Admiralty Court pursuant to s.20(2) of the Senior Courts Act 1981, and that Part 61.2 of the Civil Procedure Rules applied. The claimant refused to discontinue proceedings in the County Court. The defendants then issued a strike out application. Despite arguments to the contrary made by claimant’s counsel, the judge held in favour of the defendants and agreed that the claim should have been commenced in the Admiralty Court. The judge also refus

Raegene Castle hears everything clearly when she attends Nativity Church in Menlo Park, thanks to the fact that there is a hearing loop in the sanctuary. “Loops are common in Europe,” she said, “I just wish they were more common here. About 20 years ago, Raegene attended a New Year’s Eve party and got what she thought was the flu. Instead she had meningitis, became comatose, and was in the ICU for 10 days. “The antibiotics they gave me saved my life,” she explained. “But a side effect was profound hearing loss.  I’m totally deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other.” Today, she laughingly calls herself “the Device Queen,” in reference to all the hearing assisted technology she’s tried over the years.
