Aug 30, 2019 A recent study published by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine is the first to examine hearing loss prevalence by industry within the Oil and Gas Extraction sector and most Mining sector industries. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that within these industries, 25 to 30 percent of workers, almost 1 in 3, had hearing loss. “This study highlights the large proportions of workers with hearing loss and identifies the industries within these sectors that are most affected,” said Elizabeth Masterson, PhD, epidemiologist and co-author of the study. “Occupational hearing loss is entirely preventable and knowing which workers are at greatest risk can help better tailor strategies to protect their hearing.” The

"I knew over the years my hearing loss had increased, but it wasn't until my friend pointed out to me that I was constantly saying, 'What?' and 'Huh?' and strongly encouraged me to get my hearing tested that I thought it might really be a thing," says Lorina. The results of Lorina's hearing screening showed moderate hearing loss on one side and severe loss on the other side. "When I was fitted with a hearing aid, I was amazed!" Lorina says. A thesaurus and dictionary. (Julia Ewan/The Washington Post) August 30 at 5:27 PM “Words without thoughts never to heaven go,” said King Claudius in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet .” Rochester, N.Y.-based English teacher Jim Quinlisk might have wanted to read that line. His words, along with other allegations, have placed him at the center of a public termination hearing this week. It all started last school year during a class reading of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” A student stumbled upon a line in the play that included the word “niggardly,” according to the Democrat and Chronicle . Quinlisk paused the reading and started a class discussion about the word, according to WROC . “Niggardly” means reluctance to give or spend, according to Dictionary.com . It can also mean miserly. That’s not what Quinlisk explained to his class, according to WROC. He told them “niggard” is related to the racial slur, and he allegedly said the n-word multiple times during the discussion. She wears a hearing aid on her left ear and a CROS device on her right ear, both of which help her to access sound. High school poses changes for Ally, like a bigger school and class sizes. “There are two different floors she’ll have to travel between,” said Ally’s mother, Tammie Deso. “She’ll have to manage her own schedule with multiple teachers, where she used to have the same class at Clarke for six to eight weeks.” Ally will also have a locker for the first time, too. House Judiciary postpones gun bills hearing over Hurricane Dorian | TheHill - The Hill

Image
The House Judiciary Committee announced on Friday that, due to Hurricane Dorian hindering lawmaker travel, it is postponing a planned early return from recess to consider gun reform legislation.  The panel had planned to mark up bills to ban high-capacity ammunition magazines and prevent people convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes or considered high-risk from having guns.  ADVERTISEMENT Five members of the Judiciary Committee represent districts in Florida, which is expected to be hit hard by Dorian late Monday or early Tuesday.  A number of House Democrats had called for cutting the chamber’s six-week summer recess short to take up gun control bills in response to back-to-back mass shootings earlier this month in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas. House Democratic leaders opted against bringing members back early, instead arguing they should keep the pressure on Senate Republicans to take up a House-passed bill to expand background checks.  But the Judiciary Committee announced

Image
AUBURN — A Mexico man who is seeking a new hearing to overturn a 45-month sentence said the Lewiston police officer who testified against him had a history of drug use and evidence-tampering that made him an unreliable witness and whose testimony lacked credibility. Norman “Bo” Thompson appears in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn on Wednesday. His attorney, Paul Corey, is standing behind Thompson. Sun Journal/Christopher Williams Norman “Bo” Thompson, 47, filed a motion in Androscoggin County Superior Court last week aimed at reversing the nearly four-year sentence a judge imposed on him in January. Nicholas Meserve, 34, a 10-year veteran of the Lewiston Police Department, testified at Thompson’s Jan. 31 probation revocation hearing. Vision, Hearing Issues Tied to Reduced Quality of Life in Older Adults - PsychCentral.com

Of the five senses, impairments in vision and hearing, especially in combination, may have the greatest impact on the health of older adults, according to a new study by researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. These impairments are linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes, such as limitations in physical function and activities of daily living (ADLs), social isolation, cognitive decline, depression , poor self-rated health (SRH), communication difficulties, and even death. The findings are published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society . “We investigated how vision and hearing impairments impact life expectancy and health expectancy among older adults,” said Dr Rahul Malhotra, Head of Research, Centre for Ageing Research and Education, Duke-NUS, and senior author of the study. “We were specifically interested in understanding how these impairments affect health expectancy when health is defined by a) physical function and b) the ability to perf

Hearing held in Mario Batali’s indecent assault case - WTOP

Image
BOSTON (AP) — A hearing has been held in the indecent assault and battery case against celebrity chef Mario Batali. A spokeswoman for Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins said Batali didn’t attend Friday’s hearing at Boston Municipal Court and wasn’t required to. She also said no trial date was set. The case returns to court Sept. 4. Batali pleaded not guilty in May to forcibly kissing and groping a woman at a Boston restaurant in 2017. His career crumbled in the wake of that and other accusations of sexual misconduct. The accuser says Batali groped and kissed her repeatedly without her consent after he took a selfie with her. Batali’s lawyer has said the charge is “without merit.” Earlier this month Eataly USA bought out Batali’s minority interest in the Italian marketplace company. Copyright © 2019 The Associated Press. Victorian child hearing-loss databank to go global: A unique databank that profiles children with hearing loss will help researchers globally understand why some children adapt and thrive, while others struggle - Science Daily

A unique Victorian databank that profiles children with hearing loss will help researchers globally understand why some children adapt and thrive, while others struggle. The Victorian Childhood Hearing Impairment Longitudinal Databank, which has collected information for eight years, is featured in the latest International Journal of Epidemiology . Its data shows that language development and speech in hearing-impaired children lags behind other children, despite advancements in earlier detection and intervention in the past decade. The paper's* lead author, Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Dr Valerie Sung, says researchers world-wide can use the databank to answer questions around childhood hearing loss. "This register can help us understand why some children with a hearing loss do so well, while others experience greater difficulties," she says. The program’s diverse team comprises audiologists, speech-language pathologists, auditory-verbal therapists and pediatric otolaryngologists. Together, they work to improve the timeliness of early diagnosis of and intervention for hearing loss. After diagnosis and intervention, the relationship is really just beginning. “We couldn’t just put an implant in a child and then send them off to their school or back to their home community without any training or assistance,” said Sound Support director Teresa Zwolan. “So, we make sure that our program provides outreach to all related professionals in Michigan to maximize the outcomes that our children with implants have.” Sound Support provides onsite training to teachers, therapists and others who work with children who are deaf or hard of hearing on a variety of topics, including cochlear implants, hearing aids, auditory-verbal therapy and assistive devices. “We know that our work can’t end at our clinic door,” Zwolan said. “And not ev
