A device that uses a dollar’s worth of open-source parts and a 3D-printed case could help the hundreds of millions of older people worldwide who can’t afford existing hearing aids to address age-related hearing loss. Scientists designed the ultra-low-cost, proof-of-concept device, known as LoCHAid, to be easily manufactured and repaired in locations where conventional hearing aids are priced beyond the reach of most citizens. “We have shown that it is possible to build a hearing aid for less than the price of a cup of coffee.” The minimalist device is expected to meet most of the World Health Organization’s targets for hearing aids aimed at mild to moderate age-related hearing loss. The prototypes built so far look like wearable music players instead of a traditional behind-the-ear hearing aids. “The challenge we set for ourselves was to build a minimalist hearing

Lockdown Could Worsen Hearing Woes for Seniors - WebMD

Image
By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, Sept. 29, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Isolation due to the pandemic and failure to get hearing aids checked has fueled anxiety, depression and more hearing loss for many seniors. "This has been a very difficult time as senior facilities and individuals try to balance poor health outcomes related to COVID-19 versus poor health outcomes related to social isolation," said Catherine Palmer, president of the American Academy of Audiology. Unfortunately, older adults who use hearing aids may be using them less, because they think there's no one to interact with. This can reduce sound input to the brain and lead to auditory deprivation. The individual will be seen as not hearing as well and needing extra effort when communicating. "Family members and friends should encourage their loved ones to continue to use their hearing aids -- there is always sound around us," Palmer said in an academy news release. Hearing aids

Court revives Union Pacific conductor's ADA claim, finding 'extensive search' for accommodation never occurred - HR Dive

Dive Brief: A federal appeals court has revived a Union Pacific train conductor's Americans with Disabilties Act (ADA) lawsuit, saying that the employer's purported "extensive search" for accommodations never occurred ( Mlsna v. Union Pacific Railroad Co ., No. 19-2780 (7th Cir. Sept. 14, 2020)). Union Pacific maintained rules related to hearing safety that were stricter than federal regulations. Namely, it required certain employees to wear ear protection that met a certain standard. The plaintiff, however, had a hearing impairment and when wearing the usual protection, could not pass a hearing test. He suggested alternatives and the employer said it researched other options, to no avail. He was eventually fired and he sued, alleging Union Pacific failed to accommodate his impairment. A federal district court granted summary judgment for the employer, finding that the plaintiff had not shown that a reasonable jury could conclude that he could fulfill the essenti

$1 Hearing Aid for Age-Related Hearing Loss - Medgadget

Researchers at Georgia Tech have developed an ultra low-cost hearing aid, for which all the components cost in total less than $1. Designed to be worn by people with age-related hearing loss, the technology provides much of the functionality of conventional hearing aids, but at a tiny fraction of the price. The device may represent a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people worldwide who need a hearing aid but can’t afford one. Age-related hearing loss is very common, and it can be isolating for older people. “The ability to hear makes a critical quality-of-life difference, especially to older people who may have less access to social relationships,” said Vinaya Manchaiah, a researcher involved in developing the new device. “Hearing has a direct impact on how we feel and how we behave. For older adults, losing the ability to hear can result in a quicker and larger cognitive decline.” While losing your hearing can be a huge blow, it can be particularly bad when you can’t aff

Kamala Harris' Supreme Court hearing participation could be unprecedented - ABC News

An expert told ABC News there are no "historical parallels." September 27, 2020, 12:07 PM • 7 min read Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Email this article On the campaign trail, Sen. Kamala Harris often mentions that her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, told her she "may be the first to do many things," but it's unlikely questioning a Supreme Court nominee just a few weeks before Election Day ever came up. Harris is uniquely positioned as a Democratic vice presidential nominee and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which offers recommendations on Supreme Court nominees before the Senate holds a vote. "This hasn't happened -- this is unprecedented," said Joel Goldstein, a professor at St. Louis University who's studied the vice presidency extensively. Goldstein pointed to the fact that few SCOTUS nominations have taken place during presidential campaigns and that Supreme Court nominees testifying before the Sena

TikTok judge schedules Sunday hearing as Trump's ban looms - Press Herald

Image
A federal judge scheduled a rare Sunday morning hearing to decide whether the U.S. can go through with its ban on the popular video-sharing app TikTok. ByteDance Ltd., TikTok’s Chinese owner, has asked the court to block the ban, set to begin on Sunday night, even as it pursues approvals from the government for the sale of a stake in its U.S. operations to Oracle Corp. and Walmart Inc. under pressure from President Trump. It argued in court filings Friday that the ban would trample constitutional free-speech protections. Trump cited national security risks in August, when he announced a ban on the widely used network from U.S. app stores. The president, who’s also barred WeChat, owned by China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd., has told ByteDance its only alternative is to sell its American TikTok business. The U.S. Justice Department argues the apps potentially give the China’s government access to millions of Americans’ personal data. The government emphasized those concerns in a filing o
