Hearing impairment doesn’t slow hard-working Hand goalie Eric Dillner - New Haven Register

Image
NORTH BRANFORD — He looks up at the glass when he leaves the crease to play the puck, because arrayed there around Hand junior hockey goalie Eric Dillner’s own reflection is the game. He can see the other team’s forecheck coming at him from behind. And he can see where his teammates are. “Because I can’t hear them say ‘one on!’ or something like that,” Dillner said. Dillner is hearing impaired, normally wears a hearing aid in his left ear but has trouble wearing it on the ice. Playing with the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association (AHIHA) made him a better skater, though, and helped ease his transition to the net two years ago. And fortunately, his father, a goalie coach, is there to help. So there in that reflection of his own is the game, as it’d like to be: inclusive, a family and proof of the value of work. “(The Tigers) all know who the hardest worker on the ice is,” Hand coach Brian Gonsalves said. “Everyone on the roster feeds off that. 'Beethoven mice' prevent deafness: Medicine's next big thing? - WNDU-TV

Image
Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital have found a potential treatment for hereditary deafness, the same condition thought to have caused Ludwig van Beethoven to lose his hearing. The scientists are using a new gene-editing approach that they say could someday prevent profound hearing loss. Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 is a cornerstone of classical music. It is hard to believe the composer was almost completely deaf from a genetic condition when he finished it. "These children are born fairly normal, but then over 10 or 20 years, they lose their hearing," Harvard neurobiology professor Dr. David Corey. Aptly named "Beethoven mice" might hold the key to a potential cure. Scientists believe the animals have a defect in the same gene that may have caused Beethoven's deafness. "Our genome is composed of about 3 billion letters of DNA that together make up 20,000 genes," Corey explained. "For the disease we

Fotis Dulos, hospitalized after suicide attempt, in 'dire' condition, lawyer says - NBC News

Fotis Dulos, the real estate developer charged with murdering his estranged wife, remained hospitalized in New York on Wednesday following a suicide attempt, with his lawyer calling his condition "dire." A Connecticut judge meanwhile ruled that Dulos would not have to deal with a discrepancy in a $6 million bond he posted until and unless he recovers. Dulos was found unresponsive in his garage in Farmington on Tuesday after he got called earlier in the day to an emergency bond hearing at noon. That hearing was canceled when Dulos did not show up, and another hearing was scheduled for noon Wednesday at court in Stamford. During the hearing, the judge raised Dulos' bond from $6 million to $6.5 million, according to NBC Connecticut. The judge also addressed questions about the collateral Dulos used to post a $6 million bond for his release from jail earlier this month, after he was charged with the murder of his wife, Jennifer Dulos, who was last seen in May. Panel Asked to Revive Challenge to Florida Hearing Aid Regulations - Courthouse News Service

Image
ATLANTA (CN) — A former Florida hearing aid specialist asked an 11th Circuit panel Wednesday to reinstate his lawsuit challenging rules regulating the sale of hearing aids in the Sunshine State, the nation’s largest market for the devices. Robert Taylor, who worked as a licensed Florida hearing aid specialist for 30 years until he declined to renew his license in 2017, sued the Florida Board of Hearing Aid Specialists and the secretary of the Florida Board of Health, claiming the state’s “onerous, outdated, and unconstitutional regulations” unfairly limit access to hearing aids and unnecessarily increase costs.
