Cohen hearing: Here's what Montana's delegation said - Billings Gazette
Asked about their impressions of the public hearing of President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, whether Cohen was credible and what action they thought Congress should take next, the Republicans in Montana’s delegation said they didn’t watch the hearing. Democrat Sen. Jon Tester said it was important to let the process play out.
Cohen testified Wednesday to the House Oversight and Reform committee in cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. Cohen begins a three-year prison sentence in May after he pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in 2017 and committing campaign finance violations while he was working for Trump.
“The American people deserve to see those in public life held accountable, and they deserve transparency — so it’s important folks put politics aside and follow the facts and the money regardless of where they may go,” Tester said in an issued statement.
Republicans Sen. Steve Daines and Greg Gianforte didn’t watch the Cohen hearing.
“Aside from having a brief lunch and voting to protect law-abiding gun owners, Greg has been meeting with Montanans all day and hasn’t watched a minute of it,” said Travis Hall, Gianforte’s communications director.
Daines' staff said he didn’t watch and doesn’t find Cohen credible.
“The senator spent the day meeting with Montanans in D.C. He believes it’s important to prioritize Montana, over a sensationalized hearing meant to produce soundbites,” said Julia Doyle, a Daines spokeswoman. Doyle said because Cohen is on his way to prison for lying to Congress once before, Daines believes he lacks credibility.
