Santa Clarita Audiologist Shares Connection Between Hearing And Quality Of Life - KHTS Radio

Nola Aronson, a Santa Clarita audiologist from Advanced Audiology, is discussing the connection between a person’s hearing and their overall quality of life.

“Hearing loss impacts all aspects of our life,” Aronson said. “It impacts our emotional wellbeing and our physical health and our careers and our leisure activities, and yet millions of people who have hearing loss let it go untreated.”

Aronson continued that being able to hear properly enables people to connect with others without struggling to understand them or feeling embarrassed that they can’t hear what’s being said.

“When we hear our best, there’s nothing stopping us from enjoying the sounds of laughter, of music, of nature, of conversations,” Aronson said. “These sounds, they impact us, they fuel us, they make life more memorable, more enjoyable. When we have a hearing problem, those sounds we’ve taken for granted, they fade away and they lead to many changes that can impact us emotionally.”

For instance, not being able to hear what’s being said in a group of friends or family members may lead the person with untreated hearing loss to feel left out, and even stop attending these types of gatherings as a result, according to Aronson.

“Feeling left out leads to depression and social isolation,” she said. “They did a recent study and they found that adults with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety (and) paranoia than their peers that wore hearing devices.”

One of Aronson’s recent patients was a musician who had gone without the ability to listen to his music for some time as a result of his untreated hearing loss. But when he finally decided to give Aronson the opportunity to help him, his reaction was priceless.

“When he turned on his music in his hearing aids, his face lit up like a little kid with this big smile,” Aronson recalled. “That made my heart melt, because that’s really what I want to do for people. I want them to know what they’ve been missing. I want them to say, ‘Wow, you changed my life, Nola,’ … and that is all I do this for.”
