A deaf couple in Moscow shares a mutated gene that's certain to pass on to any children and impair their hearing. Geneticist Denis Rebrikov has spoken to them about potentially participating in a risky experiment to correct the mutation that uses the genome editor CRISPR. Science spoke with the woman, who explained that they have yet to join the study—she, in particular, has deep reservations about whether the risk is worth the benefit. But at the same time, the couple is intrigued by the possibility of having children with normal hearing and might go forward if regulators approve such a trial.
