American Girl announces its 2020 'Girl of the Year' is their first doll with disability - Thehour.com

American Girl's newest doll will be all about inclusivity.

The Mattel-owned company announced their 2020 "Girl of the Year" doll will be their first doll with a disability, according to USA Today.

The doll is named Joss Kendrick. She is 10 years old, a surfer and competitive cheerleader.

Joss will also wear a hearing aid.

"She has congenital hearing loss. She was born deaf in her left ear and can hear a little bit in her right ear," American Girl president Jamie Cygielman told USA Today.

According to the American Girl website, Joss has brown eyes and long brown hair.

"She’s determined to prove herself as a cheerleader and a surfer girl and realizes that an all-in attitude and an open mind might help her fly higher than ever before," the website said.

American Girl worked with the hearing loss community on Joss' story, USA Today reports.

Prior to Joss, the company has offered dolls with crutches, wheelchairs or that can be fitted for hearing aids. However, this is their first character who has a disability as part of its story.
