This New Gaming Headset Can Protect The Precious Hearing Of Young Gamers - Forbes

Keeping kids happy and engaged in these strange times of pandemics, lockdowns, and social distancing is no easy task. With many of the world’s children now off school for the foreseeable future, keeping them occupied is bound to involve some form of technology. It’s tempting to let a smartphone or tablet take the strain of childminding by letting the kids watch a cartoon or play their favorite computer game. Of course, if you’re working from home at the same time, you’re not going to want to hear the incessant cacophony of a Bugs Bunny or the infuriating soundtrack of Candy Crush. To stop these intrusions, many of us will give kids a pair of headphones to use… as much for our sanity as for their enjoyment.

But how can you monitor how loudly children listening through headphones? Keeping them safe on the Internet by using parental controls is now relatively simple thanks to security software and built-in controls included with most home routers. However, protecting your kids when they’re using headphones is not so easy. I well remember as a young boy, I was often turning up my headphones to a ridiculously high volume. Unfortunately, back in those days, we didn’t know as much about long-term hearing damage that can occur from listening to music or gaming soundtracks at too high a level for long periods.

If you’re one of those worried parents, then a new headset from ONANDOFF will definitely be of interest. The unusually named company is headquartered in Hong Kong and was the brainchild of Icelanders, Petur Olafsson and Bjarki V Gardarsson, and Hong Konger Yvonne Lo. The company came up with the idea of making fun and affordable headphones that would be safe for children to use thanks to a patented feature that limits volume levels to 85dB. That maximum level is essential if you want to protect your children’s precious hearing.

The BuddyPhones Galaxy is a new gaming headset launched at CES 2020 and includes a microphone so kids can chat with each other when they’re playing group games that involving interaction and role play. The Galaxy is the first gaming headset to incorporate volume-limiting circuitry to keep younger gamers safe from hearing damage. Because the volume can’t be turned up higher than 85dB, younger gamers become accustomed to gaming and listening at lower volume levels. It sets them up with good listening habits at a young age. When you stop to think about it, giving a child a pair of headphones without a volume limit is a really bad idea.

As well as being kid-friendly, the BuddyPhones Galaxy also appeals to kids as they’re available in Fuschia or Cool Grey. The microphone can easily be detached when not used and the headphones feature comfy padded ear cushions as well as a padded headband to make them comfortable to wear on long journeys. Obviously, the size of the headphones is tailored for small people’s heads and so there fit over the ears is secure. Also included in the box is a Buddy Cable that lets two people share the same sound using a second pair of headphones. And just for fun, a set of colorful stickers are also in the box so kids can decorate the Galaxy headset to suit their own tastes.

At just $29.99 (£25.32 / €27.54), the BuddyPhones Galaxy is an affordable way to protect your children’s precious hearing while still helping them enjoy movies and games.
