Whether we're from Mayflower-Yankee, Ellis Island or Rio Grande stock, everybody's curious to know more about where they came from, who they are, why they look the way they do, why Grandpa does that strange thing when he walks. The way to do that is with a genetic ethnicity and traits test, and now's the perfect time to gift yourself (or a loved one) with a great one: the Ancestry DNA test kit, A.K.A. the most detailed such test available.

Why so perfect? Cuz, normally retailing for $99, it's now on sale for just $59 — that's a 40 percent savings!

Many products claim to be fun for the whole family, and this one truly is — the whole, extended family. The AncestryDNA test kit is a simple saliva test that yields rich, detailed results about background, ethnic origins and more.

For a little background, Ancestry is the world's largest online family-history resource (we're talking 10 million people tested so far). It not only tells people about themselves but can connect them with others they may be related to. The service can map ethnicity back through multiple generations, and its ever-growing list of DNA matches means it may even help identify relatives you never knew you had. If you've been considering other services, know that this has the biggest (as in double its competitor) and the broadest pool of matches.

Once you send in the sample, the lab gets to work. Ancestry will send an email indicating that results are ready to view online. (By the way, privacy is an option; anyone who doesn't want their info shared can just download the findings and tell Ancestry to delete the files.)

Some users say it helped them unearth old family secrets — sometimes sad, sometimes shocking, always fascinating.

"This really works—too well," writes one shopper. "I use this kit to help me complete my family's tree after the death of my dad. When the results came back I unearthed a 46-year-old secret... I found out I was adopted AND biracial!"

They continued: "As you can imagine, my mind is blown away. I'm writing this review four months after recovering from my DNA results. This kit connected me to my bio-parents (they were very young teens when I was born). And now I'm living my 'new normal.' My 'adopted' family (strange to use 'adopted' as I never knew I was) and I are healing, as all of my aunts and uncles kept this secret sealed. And my brothers (they aren't adopted) and I are supporting each other as I move through my matrix."
