Robert Mueller To Testify Before House Committees After Being Subpoenaed - NPR

VA Secretary: One-sided hearing puts HVAC bipartisanship at risk - VAntage Point Blog

Today, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie released a letter he wrote to House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano regarding the committee’s decision to exclude VA from testifying before the committee during a  hearing  on the department’s handling of whistle blower complaints. In the letter, Wilkie expressed disappointment with the committee’s new, one-sided approach, a departure from the holistic oversight the committee has conducted for years. “When the committee holds a hearing to air criticisms of the Department, while simultaneously preventing the Department from participating to offer context and defend itself, the Committee’s efforts risk appearing more like a political press conference than a hearing aimed at a balanced look at serious issues.  If this is how the Committee intends to conduct oversight of the Department in the future, an exclusionary approach could chip away at the Committee’s oft stated goal of bipartisanship,” Wilkie

Ruggerio: Senate won't hold hearing on PUC nominee - The Providence Journal

The Senate president said it would be "premature" to conduct hearing on the appointment of Laura Olton. Under state law, must be a Rhode Island "elector" to be a commissioner, but she has lived till now in Wellesley, Mass. PROVIDENCE — Senate President Dominick Ruggerio has pulled the plug — at least for now — on Gov. Gina Raimondo's nomination of former National Grid lawyer Laura Olton to chair the state's rate-setting Public Utilities Commission. With time running short on the legislative session expected to end Friday, and no confirmation hearing scheduled yet on the Olton appointment, Ruggerio on Tuesday issued a late-day statement that said:    “It would be premature to conduct an advice and consent hearing on the appointment of Laura Olton to the PUC while she is not a qualified elector of this state as required by statute. Therefore, the Senate Environment & Agriculture Committee will not be scheduling a hearing on her appointment prior to the

You can now customize your  WPXI News App  to receive alerts for Fayette County news.  CLICK HERE  to find out how. The suit says the victim was hit in the head and ear when he was sleeping, and claims the coaches then made fun of the student following the incident because of his hearing loss. "The incident with my client was wholly preventable if the coaches charged with the protection of these students had done their job and made sure that when these students were placed in a large open area they were supervised," attorney Joel Sansone said. The alleged incident happened in August, 2018 at 1 a.m. The victim's lawyer told Channel 11 that after the incident the coaches made fun of his hearing loss. Sound Pharmaceuticals announces positive topline results from the SPI-1005 Phase 2b Meniere's Disease clinical trial - P&T Community

Image
SEATTLE , June 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Sound Pharmaceuticals today announced positive top-line results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center Phase 2b study in Meniere's Disease (MD). The study consented 149 adult patients with active MD, including a hearing loss at baseline of > 30 dB in one of three low frequencies, to receive either placebo, 200, or 400 mg SPI-1005 by mouth, twice daily for 28 days, with follow-up assessments at 4 and 8 weeks after the start of treatment. The pre-specified audiometric endpoints were to determine if SPI-1005 could improve hearing sensitivity or thresholds in dB by a clinically relevant difference vs placebo. In the trial, clinically relevant improvements in hearing loss (≥10 dB gain from baseline at one low frequency) using pure-tone audiometry (PTA) were significantly higher in the 400 mg dose group vs placebo (61% vs 37%, p<0.023), a relative improvement of 65% over placebo at 8 weeks. Placebo test means no college credit for 336 Mainland AP students - Daytona Beach News-Journal

Hundreds of freshmen at Mainland High School lost the chance to earn $600 worth of college credit this year, and the school's principal is under investigation after giving those students a "placebo" exam instead of an official one. Of the 414 freshmen enrolled in a new Advanced Placement Seminar course at the Daytona Beach school this year, only 78 of them took the final exam that would give them college credit if they passed. [PREVIOUS: Food Brings Hope forges bright future for Mainland student] The remaining 336 students and their parents most likely don’t know they took a “placebo” test, thanks to plans by school officials to make it look like the real thing. But come July 5, when scores are released by the organization that puts out AP exams, more than three-quarters of the students in the class won’t be able to find an official score. And neither will colleges. The News-Journal obtained a 25-page summary of a Volusia schools investigation that indicates blunder

Fertility doctor's licence revoked after he used own sperm to inseminate patients - CBC News

Image
Ontario's medical regulator has revoked an Ottawa man's medical licence after determining he committed professional misconduct by using his own sperm to inseminate several patients and using the wrong sperm with several others while he was a practising fertility doctor. Bernard Norman Barwin's behaviour, which spanned decades, was called "appalling" and "beyond reprehensible" in his public reprimand. A discipline committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has revoked Barwin's medical licence effective immediately and ordered him to pay a fine of $10,730 within 30 days.  An uncontested statement of facts read before the committee lays out the cases of more than a dozen patients who say they suffered irreparable harm as a result of Barwin's actions. A lawyer for the regulator had told the discipline committee Barwin's actions traumatized entire families and left them forever altered. Some patients discovered their chil

Hearing a Michael Jackson song still feels good. Listening has become too painful. - The Washington Post

Image
Michael Jackson performs during his "Dangerous" tour in Singapore in 1993. Ten years after the singer’s death in 2009, listening to his music has become a fraught experience. (Agence France-Presse/Getty Images) Pop music critic June 24 at 12:37 PM You’re not listening to him anymore, but you still hear him. At nightclubs, restaurants, weddings, shopping malls, grocery stores, ballgames, house parties, block parties, cookouts, spin class, the pool, the dentist, the gym. Not in your headphones, though. Not in your car, not in your house. Just anywhere and everywhere else. For a blink back in March, there was this funny idea that his music might silently drop out of circulation, that the discussion around “Leaving Neverland” — the profoundly damning HBO documentary that made his alleged child abuse more visceral than ever before — could somehow pull these melodies down from the sky. But now it’s June. The windows are open, and the voice of Michael Jackson is back

Hearing Wednesday: California Should Audit Use of License Plate Data - EFF

Image
Sacramento – On Wednesday, June 26, at 10 am, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will urge the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to approve an audit on the use of automated license plate readers (ALPR) by state law enforcement. ALPRs are camera systems that scan the license plates of vehicles in order to track people in real time and create search databases of driver’s historical travel patterns. As a mass surveillance technology, ALPR captures information on every driver, regardless of whether their vehicle is under suspicion. Several years ago, California lawmakers passed legislation to regulate ALPR use, including requiring publicly available usage policies and guidelines for how the information is accessed. State Sen. Scott Wiener, who previously supported EFF legislation to protect drivers’ from ALPR surveillance, filed the request for the audit. At the hearing Wednesday, EFF Senior Investigative Researcher Dave Maass will explain that many California law enforcement age

Topgolf case could test Kentucky law on appeal bonds - WDRB

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A Kentucky law that created a new hurdle for zoning appeals could get its first high-profile test as Hurstbourne residents weigh whether to challenge last week’s Topgolf ruling. The 2017 law lets the winning side in local planning and zoning lawsuits request that losing parties post a bond up to $250,000 if they want to appeal the case further. In her ruling last Thursday , Jefferson Circuit Judge Ann Bailey Smith upheld decisions by Louisville’s planning commission and Metro Council that rezoned land for Topgolf’s Oxmoor Center project and granted other permits and waivers. Six residents of nearby Hurstbourne filed lawsuits seeking to nullify those approvals. The residents have 30 days to appeal. If that happens, Topgolf or Louisville Metro government could ask the circuit court to impose a monetary bond and hold a hearing to determine if the challenge is “presumptively frivolous,” based on what kind of ruling is being appealed and whether there is a “re
