Ingham County clerk, son give voice to residents with hearing loss - City Pulse

Image
Chris Gray Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said it took a while before doctors could tell her what was amiss with her younger son, Bryce. He’s articulate with no noticeable signs of a disability. But careful childhood screenings kept turning up red flags. “He had failed many hearing tests in preschool,” she said. Eventually, a physician at Sparrow Hospital ordered an MRI and discovered a missing bone in his left ear, which keeps him from hearing high pitches or understanding certain words with that ear. He has a full range of hearing in his right ear, which he uses to compensate for the hearing loss in the left. Bryce was fitted with a hearing aid at the Michigan Ear Institute. Their health insurance doesn’t cover hearing aids, setting the family back $1,500 each time he needs one, and the battery needs changing every six days. Otherwise, the technology means the disability hardly sets him back at all. “We’ve tried to normalize it as much as possible,” Byrum said. The Michigan De...

Communicating with My Kids Despite Hearing Loss - NY Metro Parents

Image
Shari Eberts shares how she and her kids overcome the challenges that come with hearing loss. “Is this the year we can finally get earbuds?” It’s a question my teenagers ask me every year on their birthday, but they already know the answer: No. And they know the reason why. I have an adult-onset genetic hearing loss passed down through my father’s side of the family. Thankfully, my children have healthy hearing so far, but I need them to guard it with a vengeance. If they develop problems with their hearing in adulthood, like I did, I want them to be starting off with as little residual damage as possible—hence, no earbuds. That’s not our first struggle triggered by my hearing issues. When you’re a mom with hearing loss, communication with your children is always a bit difficult. It’s just the nature of the challenge that changes as they grow.  When they were infants, I would strain to hear their cries through the baby monitor. At night, with my hearing aids removed, I might...
