Who Would Want a Robot Caregiver? – PRINT Magazine - PRINT Magazine

I recently spent time visiting my aging parents— my father will be 88 in November and my mother is 86—so I have elder care on the brain. My parents have a diversified portfolio of children to help them out. I, on the other hand, have none, which makes futuristic elder care predictions all the more salient. What happens when the population of old people gets too big for the supply of paid and unpaid caregivers? Raising wages is the obvious answer but, as I discussed in a March 2020 Bloomberg column, the economics are terrible. To save you a click, I'm going to repeat the whole thing, with the critical facts highlighted, before I get to my new point: They are the most numerous and lowest-paid U.S. health-care workers: the 4.5 million caregivers who assist elderly and disabled people with such daily activities as bathing, dressing, feeding and toileting. Compared to other medical workers, they have the most frequent and personal contact with the elderly. That puts them on t

Image
Healthcare On Aug 12, 2022 Cooper University Health Care is celebrating its 135 years of providing high-quality, compassionate care to the residents of Camden and all of southern New Jersey. "Over the past 135 years, Cooper's transformation from a community hospital to a major academic health system has been remarkable, with Cooper now serving as South Jersey's only Level 1 Trauma Center and the region's leading cancer center, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. While today's Cooper might be unrecognizable to the first doctors and nurses who provided care here, what has remained unchanged is Cooper's commitment to service, health, and education," said George E. CULPEPER STAR-EXPONENT By CULPEPER STAR-EXPONENT A valuable investment in childhood literacy, a Little Free Library was recently installed at the Free Clinic of Culpeper. "This project started when one of our patients suggested to us many of our families do not have access to books and reading materials, particularly books with diverse representation and bilingual books," Free Clinic patient coordinator Becca Buncie said. It sparked her interest in making children's books available for clients. "It all came together in such a wonderful way," Free Clinic Director Tammy LaGraffe added. "Around the same time, I met Culpeper resident Sarah Taylor, who expressed interest in doing a volunteer project for the clinic. It turned out that Sarah and Becca are neighbors, and the free little library idea became a project," LaGraffe said in a statement.

Registered nurses at Steward Health Care-owned, Florida Medical Center, in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. will hold a press conference on Aug. 12, to protest the hospital's sudden announcement last week that they intend to shut down the psychiatric emergency and in-patient mental health units at the end of August, announced National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU) today. "I have worked in these units for 16 years and the need for psychiatric services has never been this high. There are no other options for our patients. They don't have transportation and are in no condition to travel long distances to seek care," said Gladys Emekekwue, a registered nurse who works in the psychiatric emergency and in-patient mental health units. "If this closure goes through, our patients will definitely be at great risk of suicide and self-harm. We are stunned that Steward Health Care is ordering this shut down at Florida Medical Center." Primary care doctors would need more than 24 hours in a day to provide recommended care - UChicago News

Image
If they followed national recommendation guidelines for preventive care, chronic disease care and acute care, it would take a primary care physician 26.7 hours per day to see an average number of patients, a new study finds. "There is this sort of disconnect between the care we've been trained to give and the constraints of a clinic workday," said Justin Porter, lead author of the paper and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. "We have an ever-increasing set of guidelines, but clinic slots have not increased proportionately." This study builds on others that have found a discrepancy between guidelines and a physician's time. And it has real consequences for the delivery of health care; the researchers said that time pressure helps explain why improvements in outcomes have not kept pace with advances made in the field. Time pressure plays a role in inequiti

Smoking is even more damaging to the heart than previously thought - Science Daily

Image
Smokers have weaker hearts than non-smokers,according to research presented at ESC Congress 2022. The study found that the more people smoked, the worse their heart function became. Some function was restored when people kicked the habit. "It is well known that smoking causes blocked arteries, leading to coronary heart disease and stroke," said study author Dr. Eva Holt of Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark. "Our study shows that smoking also leads to thicker, weaker hearts. It means that smokers have a smaller volume of blood in the left heart chamber and less power to pump it out to the rest of the body. The more you smoke, the worse your heart function becomes. The heart can recuperate to some degree with smoking cessation, so it is never too late to quit." According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills more than eight million people each year. Cigarette smoking is responsible for 50% of all avoidable deaths in smokers, with half of
