(Reuters Health) - - Older adults with untreated hearing loss may develop additional health problems that lead to more frequent hospitalizations and higher health costs than their counterparts without hearing trouble, two U.S. studies suggest. One study followed 4,728 people for a decade, starting when they were 61 years old, on average. Half had untreated hearing loss. Over 10 years, this translated into $22,434 more per person in total health costs and over 40 percent higher odds of hospitalizations and repeat admissions. “There are two potential causes linking hearing loss to higher healthcare spending and utilization,” said lead study author Nicholas Reed of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. “The first is that hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline, dementia, depression, and social isolation - all of which could contribute to higher healthcare spending and use,” Reed said by email. “The second is that patient-provider communication could be

Adam J. Brown, 27, appeared in Erie 3rd Ward District Judge Tom Carney's court Thursday morning for his preliminary hearing on charges including felony counts of forgery and tampering with records. But the hearing was continued after Brown requested a lawyer, and it is expected to be done by video conference from the state prison where Brown is incarcerated once a new hearing date is scheduled, Carney said. "They just missed it for all those years. There were little signs that people in my family were noticing." Those signs included her speech lagging behind and she sat too close to the tv to hear it. 

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada judge has tentatively set a preliminary hearing for January for a Reno couple accused of murder in the death of the man's 5-year-old, malnourished daughter. Defense attorney Marc Picker said Thursday Judge Pierre Hascheff set the two-day hearing for 24-year-old Tyler Anderson and his 23-year-old wife, Averyauna Anderson, for Jan. 24-25 in Reno Justice Court, subject to change. Police say Tyler Anderson's daughter, Cali, was dead in an unkempt Reno apartment for a week before he rented a truck in May, placed the child's emaciated body in a duffel bag and stashed it in a storage unit in Sacramento. Both Andersons have been charged with open murder, child neglect and destroying evidence. They're being held without bail. New Jersey lawmakers plan to hold a hearing at the state capitol in Trenton on Monday in hopes of learning more about a virus outbreak that's claimed the lives of 11 children. The New Jersey Department of Health confirmed Wednesday that 48 children and one staff member at two facilities in the state have contracted the virus. At the hearing, members of the New Jersey Senate Health Committee will question leadership from the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, the facility where all of the deaths have occurred, on how the adenovirus, a respiratory virus, infected 34 vulnerable pediatric patients, ultimately killing 11 children .
